One of the most powerful things we can do for our kids health is to remove breakfast cereals from the house.  Radical concept? Not really.

What’s radical is that we have been culturally brainwashed to eat our first meal of the day made of refined foods with added sugar, fortified salt and additives out of a cardboard box with a 3 year shelf life. Real food goes bad.  Unless it’s preserved.

Most breakfast cereal is not setting up our kids to thrive physically or mentally.  When was the last time you gave your kids fruit and veggies for breaky?

We don’t always associate eating veggies for breaky because we have been so heavily marketed to about what to eat when.  When you think about it - it makes no sense!
There is no such thing as ‘breakfast food’ or ‘dinner food’ there is just ‘food‘

When you split the word ‘Breakfast’ is made up of ‘Break’ and ‘Fast’ which is what we are essentially doing - breaking our overnight fasting.

When we break our fast with refined foods like cereal we use a huge amount of digestive energy so it’s great to get into the habit of breaking your fast with fresh fruit and veggies!
We love grated apple in our porridge, veggie platters with our eggs, avocado & bananas and fresh fruit platters.

You should absolutely make this homemade granola because you probably already have all the ingredients in your pantry! Can’t wait to see your creations!

Also - please get your kids involved in making this!! Get them to choose what goes in! This is an easy flexible recipe that you can sub things in or out depending on what they like!  Kids involved in cooking at far more likely to eat what is on offer.

Ingredients

  •  4 cups organic raw whole rolled oats
  •  1 cup desiccated coconut ( without preservatives 220)
  •  3 tablespoons sunflower seeds (Australian if possible!)
  •  3 tablespoon flax seeds
  •  3 tbs Magic Sprinkles
  •  3 tablespoon pumpkin seeds
  •  1/2 cup mixed nuts (almonds, macadamias, cashews, walnuts, pecans)
  •  1/2 cup organic coconut oil
  •  1 tbs organic vanilla extract
  •  1/2 cup organic maple syrup (not maple flavoured syrup)
  •  1/2 cup dried fruit (e.g. dates, sultanas, dates, goji berries etc) Make sure they are sulphite free! Look out for preservative 220
  •  1/2 tsp good quality sea salt (not refined white salt - try for a Himalayan salt because of the mineral content!)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees F.
  2. In a food processor, place the nuts and seeds and grind to a chunky powder
  3. Place the oats in a large mixing bowl. Add the coconut, nuts and seeds chunky powder, magic sprinkles and stir to combine.
  4. Place the maple, coconut oil and vanilla in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil for one minute and remove from heat.
  5. Pour maple/coconut mixture over the oat mixture and stir until oats are coated.
  6. Spread the granola out on a large baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until lightly toasted, stirring every few minutes to prevent burning.
  7. Let the granola cool completely then add the dried fruits and stir to combine.
  8. Store in an airtight container. Keeps for about a week. Serve with milk and fresh berries or chopped up banana or eat straight off a spoon for a snack.
